SHOPPING TIPS
eating healthy on a budget?... you don't say!
One of the first questions I hear from family and friends shifting to healthier foods is...
How am I going to eat healthy without breaking my budget?
Here are four tiny tips to help you get started.
1. Shop the race track, not the maze: Healthy foods, prepared by others can get pricey. Healthy foods you prepare will keep you on budget. It helps to keep your shopping list full of items on the "race track", or the outer loop of the grocery store. Items like fresh fruits and veggies, meats, dairy (or milk alternatives), and bulk bins are typically cheaper per serving than the items in the "maze" or middle aisles, like snacks and prepared meals.
2. Consider bulk buys: These can be tough with tiny kitchens, but there are some items to grab on your next club trip, especially for pantry and freezer essentials.
3. Check-in with your discount grocery stores: Did you know 70-80 billion pounds of food goes to waste every year!?? Before sending it to landfills, many health food brands will sell "overflow", or excess inventory to discount grocery stores. These stores are gems to help you save on your pantry, dairy (or milk alternatives), and frozen essentials.
4. Ethnic grocery stores are the gift that keeps on giving: While typically smaller than the average grocery stores, you can usually find fresh produce, spices, and high-quality meat at a fraction of the price- also a great opportunity to support local, small businesses!
